How the Isle of Wight Poet Laureate Programme Works
The Isle of Wight Poet Laureate Programme is designed to celebrate exceptional poetic talent while creating meaningful connections between poetry and community life across the Island.
Applications
Applications are open until 26 April. During this time, poets are invited to submit their work for consideration. You can find all the details on the Apply page.
Shortlisting
Once applications close, our selection committee will begin the review process. The committee is made up of representatives from a range of creative and cultural organisations across the Isle of Wight, ensuring a thoughtful and well-rounded approach to selection.
A shortlist of poets will be selected, and all applicants will be notified of the outcome by 29 June.
Final Stage
Shortlisted poets will be invited to take part in the final stage of the process. This will involve:
Creating a new, original piece of writing in response to a set theme
Attending the official Poet Laureate announcement ceremony
The final event will take place on 15 October at Quay Arts, where the Isle of Wight Poet Laureate will be formally announced.
The Laureateship
Following the announcement, the selected Poet Laureate will begin a 24-month term.
During this time, they will work collaboratively to shape their programme of activity. This may include:
Writing and sharing new poetry
Engaging with schools and young people
Participating in community events and creative projects
The programme is intentionally flexible, allowing it to reflect the Poet Laureate’s unique voice, strengths, and passions.
Legacy
At the end of the two-year term, a collection of the Poet Laureate’s work will be published by Lemon Jelly Press, creating a lasting record of their contribution to the Island’s cultural life.
